It’s
‘Merry Christmas,’ not ‘Happy Holidays’
Stop the “Killing of Christmas”! I am very disappointed at spineless
merchants trying to change Christmas into a generic holiday. I am not
offended by another’s religious holiday. I am tolerant of theirs and they
should be tolerant of mine.
This year I am refusing to purchase Christmas gifts where it is their
directive or policy to say ‘happy holidays” instead of ‘Merry Christmas.” I
do not buy advertised holiday trees, or holiday cards, or holiday
decorations, etc. I buy Christmas trees, Christmas cards and Christmas
decorations.
I do not buy holiday cards at Easter, I buy Easter cards. I do not buy
holiday cards for Hanukkah, I buy Hanukkah cards. When a store clerk wished
me a “Happy Holiday” while shopping the other day, I frankly asked her,
“Exactly what holiday?” She said ‘Well, Christmas.” I told her, “That’s
right! And a Merry Christmas to you.”
Millions, that’s right millions, of Christians as well as sympathetic
understanding non-Christians, are saying to all the politically correct
merchants, “stop being so hypocritical and filling your tills on the back of
Jesus. Who do you think is the symbol of giving at this time of year? It was
the wise men bringing gifts to the newborn Christ-child.
“You want your coffers full, but have ordered your employees to take down
all the Merry Christmas signs. If that’s the case, I’ll buy gifts at a place
that understands my joy. If you’re worried about offending someone, you just
did.”
Many wise merchants are getting the message and are changing their
advertising for next year. The most recent Newsweek survey shows that 82
percent of Americans believe that Jesus is the Son of God. So, in trying not
to offend a few, you’ve offended the many. It’s OK to jump into the “Merry
Christmas” spirit as early as September, when it fills your cash register,
but let’s call it something else?
The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Let’s squeak loud and clear. Christmas is
a celebration of Christ’s birthday n Christmas n Get it?
Bah-Humbug to Happy Holidays. Merry Christmas to all.
